The 1st session of the Ministerial Council on Mineral and Petroleum Resources met in Melbourne on 4 March 2002.
The Council was established by the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) in June 2001 to deal with issues affecting the minerals and petroleum industries. The Council consisted of the Commonwealth Minister for Industry, Tourism and Resources and State and Territory Ministers with responsibility for minerals and petroleum. The New Zealand Minister for Energy and the Papuan New Guinean Minister for Mining and the Minister for Petroleum and Energy had observer status.
All Australian jurisdictions were represented at the meeting. The meeting was chaired by the Minister for Industry, Tourism and Resources, the Hon Ian Macfarlane MP.
