Smart Meter Consumer Protections and Pricing - Draft Policy Paper One (August 2009)

Publication date: Friday, 14th August 2009.

In addition to general protections under the Australian Consumer Law, energy customers also have specific protections under state and territory laws. In the National Electricity Market, where a jurisdiction has adopted the National Energy Customer Framework, energy-specific consumer protections are provided under the National Energy Retail Law and Rules. Since smart meters create opportunities for companies to offer new products and services to customers, the Council has an ongoing work program to ensure consumer protections are appropriate where customers have a smart meter installed.

In August 2009, the Council released National Smart Meter Consumer Protections and Pricing Draft Policy Paper One as the first consultation stage of the National Smart Meter Consumer Protection and Safety Review.
